Botanical characteristics
The black zingiber tree is native to Southeast Asia. It is classified as an herbaceous plant with a lifespan of many years. The trunk is underground and grows in clumps. The height of the tree is about 1.5-3 meters and may be as high as 5 meters. The rhizome is underground. The flesh inside the rhizome is purple, faint purple or brownish purple. It has a hot, pungent odor similar to plai. Propagated by division of shoots. Must use black soil for planting. (If planted in any other color, it will cause the plant to die. Because this species can only grow in black soil), it can be found growing in humid tropical forests.
